Onnia tomentosa (= Inonotus tomentosus (Fries: Fries) Teng) and its relatives cause a white pocket-rot in roots and butts of conifers and often form terrestrial fruitbodies under spruce and other trees of the pine family. The caps often develop on a rather thick, short, brownish, tomentose stipe, one or more arising from a common base, or they may grow directly from the base of a tree. The cap surface is tomentose, yellow brown to darker brown, often with a pale edge when actively growing, and often zonate. The flesh is rather thick and has a soft, spongy upper layer and firm, fibrous lower layer. The pores are whitish to brownish, angular, and often become lacerated in age. O. tomentosa is most easily confused with terrestrial polypores in the genera Coltricia and Phaeolus.
